Portland Timbers on the Rise after Beating Sounders

The rivalry of the Pacific Northwest featuring the Portland Timbers and the Seattle Sounders is developing into the finest of the MLS.  On Sunday in front of a packed crowd at JELD-WEN Field, the Timbers put on a fine display to win 2-1 which could very well provide the anchor that will save their season.

Portland started the match off very well and dominated the entire first half.  Defender David Horst was unlucky not to put the Timbers ahead after ten minutes with a lovely header that rattled the corner of the goal frame.

However, five minutes later the breakthrough came through Kris Boyd, who was found wide open in front of goal and easily put Portland ahead.  It was a fifth goal on the season for the Scotsman who seems to have found a good home in America.  He played very well the entire night and could have doubled the lead ten minutes later with a strong header that forced Andrew Weber into a difficult save.

The ensuing corner roared the stadium back to life as Horst got onto another header for his first ever MLS goal.  It seemed rather surprising that it has taken the defender so long to score as his early efforts from corner kicks gave him the appearance as a goal poacher going forward.  With his dominant height at 6’4”, one must presume that he will continue to find goals off of headers.

Seattle never really found their groove though they did get a goal from a brilliant solo effort from Eddie Johnson who weaved through defenders before blasting the ball across goal into the top corner.  However, it was to be the Timber’s day as they held on for the last half hour and earned the crucial victory.

Portland is currently struggling in the table with only 19 points from 14 matches that leaves them in 8th place in the Western Conference.  However, with two games in hand and over half of the season left to play, this victory will give the team the hope and confidence to move forward and claim a top five place that will ensure qualification for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The rivalry with the Seattle Sounders has become a powerful image for the MLS featuring packed stadiums and tense drama.  The most recent encounter even provided two late red cards as tempers boiled over during stoppage time.  The match had the feel of an English Premier League fixture as the crowd was in heavy support, and there was even a massive banner raised during the pregame suggesting the legendary step the Timbers are taking.  The 2012 MLS season clearly has all the makings of an excellent one where the Timbers will be looking to make their mark.

Clint Dempsey the Hot Transfer Topic of this Summer

Rarely has America produced the type of talent that engages the major European soccer clubs, but Clint Dempsey could well become the greatest soccer player in US history.  Currently he plays for Fulham in the English Premier League.  He is the team’s best playmaker and has amassed 23 goals for the team in all competitions this season.

Dempsey began his professional career in America.  After growing up in Texas, he played in college for Furman University before entering the MLS draft.  He played for the New England Revolution for three seasons and dazzled scouts from around the world.

In 2007, Dempsey was recruited to the English Premier League to join Fulham.  He began his English career uncertainly, but he has improved each season and now is gathering calls from a wide array of teams, many of whom are major clubs.

Liverpool has been a shell of their former self the last few seasons and will be keen on improving their squad.  Although they have potent strikers already in Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, adding Clint Dempsey to the mix could make the team an offensive power.

Liverpool was recently bought by an American investors group and it is of no surprise that they would chase an American player, especially one of Dempsey’s quality.  They have revealed their interest in the player and could be in hot pursuit.

Another giant English club that may instigate a move is Arsenal.  They are led by striker Robin van Persie and have already added Lukas Podolski to the side this summer, but they could also look to Dempsey to add more goals from the wing positions, which have been very inconsistent for the Gunners.  Arsenal also has a large stake-holder from America in Stan Kroenke, and he could well like to see the American playing Champions League matches next season.

Clint Dempsey’s success is a bright spot for American soccer.  Plenty of players have moved abroad, such as Tim Howard and Landon Donovan, but few have had Dempsey’s level of success.  Earlier this season, the striker had a hat trick against Newcastle.  This was the first hat trick by any American in the Premier League and put Dempsey on everyone’s radar.

Dempsey should be ready for the grand stage.  He has performed well in multiple World Cups, scoring goals on two occasions.  He has also performed well against major clubs, especially during Fulham’s 2010 Europa League semifinal match against Juventus of Italy.  His brilliant chip goal at the end of the game was world class brilliance.

So where will Clint Dempsey move off to?  My best guess is Liverpool, but I also suspect he may stay with Fulham.  Although he has proven himself on the major stage, he is an integral player for Fulham, and the club could compel him to stay with a great contract offer.  One thing is certain though.  We will hear much transfer gossip and speculation regarding Clint Dempsey this summer.

Major League Soccer Kicks Off 2012

Nothing could ever drag me away from the English Premier League – especially this late in the season, especially with Man U gaining on Man C at the top of the rankings, Tottenham hanging on by a thread, and Arsenal’s Van Persie unstoppable in every match.

Nothing, that is, until last weekend, when MLS games kicked off.

Yes, that’s right, MLS over the famed EPL.  Beckerman instead of Silva, Buddle over Chicharito, Drew Moor (who? you ask – look him up.  One of the best defenders in the MLS, although I AM a Rapids fan) over Phil Jones (who? you ask – look him up.  One of the best defenders in England.)

The MLS did not disappoint.  A recap:

(Deep breath) L.A. Galaxy lost 3 – 1 to Real Salt Lake in what is fast becoming one of the biggest rivalries in MLS – although the boys from Utah had best not forget about their little brother, small-market rivalry in Denver, the Colorado Rapids, who looked strong Saturday taking care of business against perennial contenders the Columbus Crew.

FC Dallas was unconcerned about big-name players from New York (cough Thierry Henry…) putting the Red Bulls away 2-1.  DC United has yet to get back to their 90s glory, losing to upstart 2011 playoff veterans Sporting KC.

Most exciting, however, was the raucous crowd at the Portland Timbers home opener against Philadelphia.  Everyone in the league is talking about the 20,000-plus crowd that showed up for the game, the European-style chanting and cheering, and the impressive 3-1 victory Portland pulled off.

By all accounts the MLS is doing well coming into 2012.  Most teams have a soccer-specific stadium.  There are rumors of more expansion, this time into Florida.  And the two teams with big-name, big-budget European players (Galaxy & New York) lost to teams with some good ol’ home grown CONCACAF talent.

MLS may not yet be the EPL, the NFL, or even the NHL, but that’s OK – give it ten years.  The league is well managed, well funded, and has taken the long view on U.S. professional soccer.  With a new NBC TV contract in hand, a couple exciting games, and maybe just a little drama, MLS can certainly have a great 2012.
